Master in International Strategy and Trade Policy

This Program counts on the collaboration of the World Trade Organization and the World Trade Institute of the University of Bern.

The program aims at strengthening the students’ professional skills. Therefore, conceptual principles and practical tools are provided, so they can gain the necessary knowledge and background in their different areas, as well as a better understanding and analytical skills regarding the complexities of international economic negotiation processes.

The MEIPC prepares professionals for contributing to the decision-making processes in the sphere of international strategy and trade policy, with the idea of facilitating dialogue, understanding, and the joint analytical work of both the public and private sectors.

Specific objectives

The specific goals of this program is to train specialists in order to:

  • Increase their knowledge regarding the principles of Political Economy, regulations and institutions, and integration processes.
  • Understand and apply quantitative methodologies to the commercial reality of the countries.
  • Understand, by using practical tools, the problems that agents face when making decisions related to international strategy and trade policy.
  • Know, from different disciplines, the complexities of the public sector and the private sector in relation to the matters of international trade integration.
  • The program addresses the following topics, among others: political economy, international economics, multilateral trade systems, preferential trade systems, procedures for resolving trade and investment disputes, legal instruments available for international economic relations, regionalism, international business management, and statistics.

Schedule

Classes will take place at the Institute from Monday to Thursday from 6:30 to 8:30 pm, and Saturdays depending on the calendar.

Labor Market

Graduate students will be able to work in the following areas:

  • In the public sector, especially in institutions developing activities in the fields of trade, finance, cooperation, environment, and diplomacy.
  • In the private sector, especially in organizations that carry out international activities related to trade, investment and services, or that are interested in the process of international integration.
  • Third sector organizations (NGOs, political parties, Unions) whose scope of activity contains international components.
  • International organizations, particularly those related to trade, investment, services, intellectual property, environment, and others.
  • The media.
  • In professional activities addressing the labor integration challenges.

Requirements and Application

Minimum Requirements

Applicants must have a Bachelor's degree or professional degree, awarded by a national or foreign universities, or by higher education institutes, whose level, content and length of studies are equivalent to that of a Bachelor's degree awarded at the University of Chile, defined by the Academic Committee of the Program.

Applicants must fill out the application form provided by the Institute of International Studies and attach the following documents:

  • Official certificate, issued by a competent authority, of the university professional degree or Bachelor's degree. A certified copy thereof is accepted for the purpose of the application. Regarding foreign students, the certificate must be authenticated with an apostille or visa issued by the Chilean Consulate of the corresponding country. The original certificate will be required to obtain the degree.
  • Grade transcripts, including equivalence scales (foreign students).
  • Letters of Recommendation.
  • Letter explaining why the applicant is interest in participating in this Program (up to 500 words in length).
  • Medical insurance for foreign students.
  • Demonstrate the ability to read texts and understand classes in English, through a language certificate authorized by the Committee.
  • Interview with Program professors. If you are not in Chile, a Skype meeting is possible.

During the application process, and in addition to the evaluation of the applicants’ personal history, the Academic Committee may request to take an examination concerning the specific discipline of the chosen Program, which allows to objectively appreciate their knowledge level.

Applications must be submitted online or in person at the Institute of International Studies.

Admission request

The application form must be completed by all candidates (national or foreign) requesting admission to the postgraduate courses and degrees offered by the Institute of International Studies of the University of Chile.

The clarity and accuracy of the answers will allow correctly evaluating the personal history and experience of the candidate.

Application Process

  • Applications are already open and they will be received until December 2023. Please use the application form provided by the Institute.
  • The interviews take place once the Graduate School has all the information about the applicants.
  • Applicants living abroad:
    • The interview will be conducted on Skype and a certificate of proficiency in Spanish will be required, where appropriate.
    • It is recommended that students coming from abroad arrive at least 10 days before classes start.
