Mission and Vision

Mission

The Institute of International Studies aims to develop teaching, research and extension activities. This requires understanding the world from multiple perspectives by making the most of the knowledge and theoretical frameworks of different academic fields, such as history, political science, international relations, international law, sociology, anthropology, philosophy and economics. The purpose is to establish connections between these different standpoints, understanding how they relate to each other and how they can be framed on a larger scale. Its main mission is contributing to the understanding and analysis of the international reality, based on a multidisciplinary approach that takes advantage of the different perspectives of the disciplines involved. In other words, it does not just imply to transcend the boundaries between two or more fields of knowledge, but rather to integrate theories, methodologies and points of view of different disciplines in an interdisciplinary way, in order to explore their connections and blur the boundaries between them; from the University of Chile to Latin America and the world.

Therefore, the Institute has a Postgraduate School and two Academic Units: International Relations and Global Public Policies, and International Legal and Economic Relations. Likewise, the board is supported by coordinating bodies in the areas of research, extension activities, financing and staff.

In addition, the role of the Postgraduate School is to organize, develop, manage and teach the courses for the obtainment of postgraduate degrees and diplomas, in accordance with the quality standards of the University of Chile, which is the governing body to which the students of the Institute are attached to.

The Academic Unit of International Relations and Global Public Policies is responsible for research, teaching and extension activities in areas such as international relations theory, global studies, foreign policy analysis, comparative foreign policy, the history of international relations, strategic studies and regional studies, among others.

Likewise, the Academic Unit of International Legal and Economic Relations develops mainly research, teaching and extension activities concerning international law, human rights, international humanitarian law, the law of the sea, Antarctic law, international economic relations, international political economy, international negotiations, and trade policy.

The Institute of International Studies depends on the Presidency of the University of Chile and is governed by the rules of the University Decree No. 0014095 of May 19th, 2010, which establishes the General Regulations for Institutes, complemented by the specific regulations of this Academic Unit, set out in the University Decree No. 003378 of January 11th, 2019.

Vision

The vision of the Institute of International Studies is to be a benchmark for Latin America in these matters, based on a pluralistic, solidary and active reflection, committed to the development of global thinking. Latin American and global politics are responsible for promoting a comprehensive economic-administrative management, including both the efficient use of resources and the generation of new funding sources to strengthen the Institute and the academic development of international studies in Chile, as well as its international projection.
